A bet made with the intent to convince some of the remaining players to fold while keeping at least one opponent still in the hand.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is typically done when a player has a strong hand that is vulnerable to being outdrawn, such as a high pocket pair in Texas Hold'em.
EXAMPLE: "There were a lot of players in the pot. Although I had a strong hand, the chance of someone else getting a better one was just so strong with so many people playing. I made a protection bet. Even if it hadn't gotten many people to fold, at the very worst there was more money in a pot that I was at an advantage to win."
APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
RELATED TERMS: Freeze Out, Protect, Protection
A small bet that is intended to prevent an opponent or opponents from making a larger bet.
EXAMPLE: "We were playing $2/$4 Limit Hold'em. I had a drawing hand in late position, and it was checked around to me on the flop. I knew if nobody bet here someone would try to steal the pot on the turn, so I made a protection bet hoping it would prevent a steal. If I didn?t complete my hand on the turn, I had a chance of a free card on the river, and if I did complete my hand then I had a chance at a bigger pot."
