Pot

  1. Noun

A central fund in which players place their wagers and which will be given to the winner of the hand. Occasionally, the full amount of the pot will not be provided to the winner due to the house rake or due to a player agreement to pot for a shared purchase.

EXAMPLE: "I won a lot of hands last time I played, but usually when the pot was small."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  2. Noun

The total amount of chips or money contributed as potential winnings for a given hand; the sum of the antes, blinds, bets, raises, reraises, and calls in a given hand. Can be used either including or excluding money for the house rake or money set aside to pot a shared purchase.

    EXAMPLE: "The pot is $340."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  3. Noun

The physical space on the poker table where chips or money are placed when wagered.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Chips that are placed in the pot cannot be removed during a hand. If players accidentally place chips in the pot they must wager those chips. In some cases the perimeter of the pot is marked in order to prevent possible disputes from arising about whether or not chips were actually wagered.

EXAMPLE: "If you're not betting, keep your chips away from the pot."

    APPLIES TO: Land-based Venues

  4. Noun

One hand or round of game play.

EXAMPLE: "I'll sit out this pot."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues

  5. Verb

To set aside a portion of the wagered money to buy something for the group of players, such as snacks or drinks; pot out. Done only upon agreement of all players.

EXAMPLE: "We were all getting hungry, so we decided to pot for a pizza and some soda."

APPLIES TO: Online and Land-based Venues
