Deal

  1. Verb

    To distribute cards, either to individual players or to the board.

    EXAMPLE: "I dealt last hand, so it is your turn to deal."

  2. Noun

    The responsibility to distribute cards, especially when the responsibility rotates among players; in blind games, a turn in the dealer position.

    The period of game play in which each players' initial cards are distributed.

    EXAMPLE: "I got a flush on the deal and decided to stay pat."

    An agreement to split prize money in a tournament.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Poker varies from many other types of competitions in that some tournament organizers will formally recognize an agreement of the players to distribute the prize pool in a manner other than the initial payout structure. In cases where the house does not recognize such agreements, it may still be permissible to make them and then have the formally recognized winner or winners redistribute the money accordingly.

    EXAMPLE: "I sometimes try to make a deal if I'm short stacked at the final table and think there is a decent chance I won't place well."
